ORIENTATION DAY

The first Monday at the Academia Latinoamericana is an orientation day: every student will take an oral and written placement test. This has no other purpose than to place the student in the right group at the right level. Students are also evaluated every week. After the placement test all new students go on a city tour of Quito/ Cusco/ Sucre to get to know the city and learn how to get around and use the public transport system. In the afternoon there's an orientation session in which the student learns about all rules at the Academia, as well as about important issues such as security, do's and don'ts in Ecuador/ Peru/ Bolivia, the host family etc. Regular classes will start on Tuesday of the first week.

CLOUD FOREST PROGRAM (Available in Quito)

Word is just starting to get out about the academic Cloud Forest program at the Academia Latinoamericana de Español. Students stay at a lodge and reserve tucked on the western doorstep of the Tandayapa Reserve, which is dedicated to protecting one of the most unspoiled and beautiful tracts of cloud forest in the country. Now is the time for nature lovers, researchers, biologists and Spanish students to begin studying the Cloud Forest in order to better understand the roles western slope cloud forests play in the evolution and maintenance of vast amounts of tropical biodiversity. Students participating in this highly regarded Spanish program will be helping to preserve this beautiful natural area, and will be providing biological information on which ecotourism thrives.

TEEN PROGRAM (Available in Quito)

The Academia Latinoamericana offers a Spanish language immersion summer program in June, July and August in Quito, Ecuador! Teens can attend the program from 2 to 8 weeks.

Our summer language program in Quito combines effective small group language courses, with an adventure in Ecuadorian culture and lifestyle. Our summer campus is located in the heart of downtown Quito and students stay with carefully selected host families.

Lessons are in small groups from Monday to Friday (8:30 am to 1:00pm) with a maximum of 5 students per class. The average class size is 2-3 students. After classes are over for the day, students have a supervised lunch at the school, and can relax and prepare for our daily afternoon program of activities, which normally lasts until 4:00pm. These fun activities such as soccer games, movie nights, ice skating, dance lessons, and visits to tourist attractions like local markets, the Cathedral and the Equator, are arranged together with Ecuadorian schoolboys, so there will be a real cultural exchange.

On the weekends we take the students on fully organized excursions to Cotopaxi National Park, the Cloud Forest, Otavalo Indigenous Market etc. On all excursions and activities the students are accompanied by a local guide or a representative of the school and are supervised at all times.

Accommodation is provided in local host families so the students get fully immersed in the Spanish language, while getting to know the culture of our country and our incredibly warm-hearted people - and at the same time this is a unique opportunity to make friends for a lifetime from all over the world.

  • Mr. Chris Musick
    Director of Study Abroad Department
    Mary Washington University

"It was truly a magnificent experience we had. I have already been telling faculty and students what a wonderful place Quito is. I know I have told you several times already but I really love Quito, I fell in love with the people, the diversity, the prices, and our very special host."

  • Dr. Michele Cruz-Saenz
    Head of the Spanish Department
    Strath Haven High School

  • Dra. Margarita Krakusin
    Head of the Spanish Department
    Alma College

"I thank you for your professionalism, courtesy and friendliness during my pleasent stay at your school. My special thank you to Diego who made me feel "at home" from the very beginning. Last but not least my very special thank you to Patty, Jenny and Johanna for their patience endiring the many hours of my limited ability to learn and retain the material from their excellent presentations. I thank you, I thank you all very much"

  • Prof. Peter Moller (Science teacher)
    Colorado Mountain College

  • Mrs. Reed Skoug (spanish teacher)
    Germantown Academy

"The school is fantastic and even better have been the trips"

  • Mrs. Donna Hanner (Spanish teacher)
    Queen Mary High School

  • Ms. Miriam Padilla
    Albert Einstein Medical School

"The trip was amazing. the school was professional, welcoming, courteous. The teachers were nice. Everyone treated us like family and were willing to help us in any way possible. Diego was awesome, his door was always open for us to come in with questions or problems. The first weekend in Otavalo and the volcanoes was the best. The clouded forest was also great but we were a little rushed in it. I would make it a four day trip. Visiting the school of medicine was good too. the families we stayed with were also great. The group was amazing. We all got along extremely well and shared a lot and had fun together. All in all the trip was wonderful. thanks."
